How to Bring the Outside In for Natural Interiors

Estimated reading time 4 minutes

Bringing nature into your home can be great for your wellbeing, helping to improve your mood and bring a sense of peace and calm. There are many ways you can bring the outside in with natural interiors – below are just some of our favourites.

Use natural materials

An easy way to bring the outside in is to incorporate natural materials into your home. Look for furniture and fixtures made from real or natural-effect wood and stone, as well as rattan furniture, bamboo, clay, and marble. These will all bring a warmth to your interiors, creating a natural feel for a calm and peaceful environment.

Kingswood at Home can design, build and install custom fitted wardrobes in various, gorgeous wood-effect finishes. With chic Nordic Grey, classic Rural Oak, and striking White Ash, you can find the wood-effect finish that suits your interior style. With made-to-measure wardrobes, you can maximise every inch of space available for stylish and practical storage solutions.

Let in natural light

Letting in as much natural light as possible is a simple way to bring the outside in. Try to keep your windows clear of clutter and try not to let your window dressings block the light. You can also use strategically placed mirrors to help distribute natural light around the room.

Shutters and blinds are perfect window dressings if you want to maximise the amount of light that comes into a room. Bespoke shutters that are made to fit your window can be fully opened when you want to let in more light, so the entire window is exposed. In addition, you can also allow light in when you want privacy, adjusting the slats to let in more light even with the shutters closed.

Made to measure blinds can also help to let in more natural light. Blinds that have been designed to fit your window can be tidily tucked away when not in use, so they won’t cover too much of the window and block the light.

Create an indoor oasis with house plants

House plants are a great way of creating a natural-feeling interior. When choosing your plants, think about the size of the room. Hanging plants can be best in smaller rooms where you might have less surface space for pots. One large plant will create a striking focal point, whereas many smaller plants can make for an interesting dynamic. If you choose multiple smaller plants, think about dimension and levels, with some up high and some lower down.

You should also look at what the specific plant needs to flourish. Some plants, such as Snake Plants, Peace Lilies, and Boston Ferns thrive in humid environments, so will be great in the bathrooms. Plants such as Calathea, Grapy Ivy, and the Bird’s Nest Fern can grow fine in low-light levels, so can be great for shadier rooms.

Utilise a green colour palette

If you’re not very green-fingered, you can fake the greenery with the colour palette of your interior. Simply by painting the walls green, you can help to bring a peaceful, natural-feeling environment into the room.

A soft sage green can make for a calming, zen space and works great with classic and cottagecore styling. A rich forest green will make more of a statement and looks gorgeous with retro or vintage styling.

Add floral and botanical patterns

Another way to bring the outside in without having to care for plants is with the materials and patterns you use. Opting for florals and botanical patterns will give you a natural feel with none of the watering requirements.

You can really play with how you bring patterns into your interiors. You can keep it subtle by opting for floral or botanical patterned cushions or make a bigger statement with floral or botanical wallpaper. For a minimalist style, you can mix and match patterns or keep it simple with just one type.
