8 Ways to Maximise Space in Your Bedroom

Estimated reading time 5 minutes

In every room of your home there are ways to maximise space - be it decluttering, using smarter storage solutions or re-thinking your colour palette. Bedrooms can prove to be particularly tricky spaces to optimise, hosting some of the largest pieces of furniture in our homes. Here we’ll guide you through creative solutions for your bedroom, so read on and unleash your bedroom’s true storage potential with these 8 top tips to help utilise your space and make way for some very clever storage solutions.

1. Choose Colour Carefully

One of the easiest ways to make your room feel more spacious is to inject soft, light shades into your interior scheme. Airy hues such as greys, pastels and soft neutrals will help the room feel bigger whilst maintaining warmth.

Paint your walls with light shades and bring in contrasting dark accents with beautiful throws and pillows, letting your accessories provide a pop of colour that complement the calming hues of the neutral palette.

2. Mirror, Mirror...

There’s a reason this is the oldest trick in the book - because it really does work! Mirrors can work magic in compact spaces, creating the illusion of space and reflecting backlight into your bedroom. Consider adding multiple mirrors into the room, from floor-length styles to wall mounted centrepieces the more you opt for the brighter the room will feel. A light colour palette will enhance the overall effect, and if you can manage to get the mirrors on a wall opposite the window, even better!

3. Choose Bespoke Storage

Well chosen storage is a fail-safe space enhancer. When it comes to storage in a small bedroom, extra rails and shelving will provide you with extra places to put your belongings. Keep your room clear and uncluttered with bespoke fitted, floor-to-ceiling shelves and cupboards that make use of every inch of spare space.

Having a smaller bedroom doesn’t necessarily mean having fewer clothes. With clever storage compartments, clothes can be sorted and stored away in an efficient and smart way. Here at Kingswood, we have developed a unique range of fitted bedroom furniture, including made-to-measure wardrobes with cutting edge styling to traditional oak veneer finishes, expertly fitted by our professional craftspeople with care and attention to detail.

4. Go Vertical

Don’t let a small room put you off wallpaper. If space is limited take your décor high in the form of a feature wall that pulls the eye upwards. Vertical stripes will elongate a room and you could even try a colourful design with a large pattern. Detailed patterns will make your room feel smaller so think big and opt for a bold, bright design.

If you are lucky enough to have high ceilings, then add floating shelves and use your vertical space for displaying artwork, or consider a vertical radiator to save floor space.

5. Be Smart with Lighting

If you are working with a small room or just want to maximise your space, then avoid floor and table lamps at all costs. Instead, choose a space-saving sconce to hang on the wall above your bed. You can also try an overhanging pendant light that will brighten up a room and doesn’t require an inch of precious table or floor space.

To really optimise your space try spreading light evenly around your bedroom. A couple of ceiling lights will draw the eye around the room and open up the space.

6. Keep Things Symmetrical

Everyone loves a little quirkiness in a room, but if you want to make a small room appear bigger then avoid asymmetry. Symmetrical design appeals to the subconscious and we tend to find symmetrical spaces more peaceful, and it’s a great trick when trying to maximise space. Double up on bedside cabinets and lighting for an easy-on-the-eye scheme, and use one key accent colour to create visual balance.

7. Embrace Awkward Spaces

Does your bedroom feel small and cluttered because of its peculiar proportions? This is often a problem with period properties and beautiful features such as bay windows, which look great but present logistical nightmares. Curtains create a large and bulky obtrusion into the room and are often made of thick material. Try blinds or window shutters for a more streamlined option for your bay windows, leaving the space beneath available for a sideboard or chest of drawers.

8. Double-Duty Furniture

To really maximise space cut back on the amount of bulky furniture in your bedroom. Try a bed that offers plenty of in-built hidden storage, or space underneath to store boxes and vacuum bags. Another great option is an end-of-bed ottoman.

Consider which items of furniture can serve multiple purposes - could your nightstand stylishly double up as a dresser for your clothes? Could a shelf work wonders as a desk? Think creatively about your options and invest in furniture that serves more than one purpose.
